Requirements management

Quick definition

Requirements management is the process of documenting, organizing, and tracking a product's requirements across its lifecycle, so that stakeholder needs are captured, agreed on, and traceable from first idea to delivery. Done well, it keeps a team building the right thing and able to prove it at any point.

What it means

Requirements do not sit still. They get added, reworded, dropped, and argued over as a project moves. Requirements management is how a team stays on top of that churn, treating each requirement, along with the constraints around it, as something to write down, review, prioritize, and link to the design and tests that satisfy it. That way nothing important slips through the gap between a spreadsheet and someone's inbox.

In regulated fields like medical devices, aerospace, and defense, this is not a nice to have. Auditors expect proof that each requirement was documented, reviewed, and verified. Even on projects with no regulator in sight, weak requirements are one of the most common reasons work gets redone or ships wrong. Teams building in Azure DevOps often manage requirements alongside their work items in a tool such as Modern Requirements, rather than in separate documents that fall out of date.

In practice

Ejemplo

A medical device team writes a requirement that the device must raise an alarm within two seconds of detecting a fault. Requirements management links that single line to the design that implements it, the test that checks the two second limit, and the risk it controls. If someone later tightens the limit to one second, everything connected to that requirement gets flagged, so the test and the design are revisited instead of quietly going stale.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the difference between requirements management and requirements engineering?
Requirements engineering is the wider discipline that covers discovering, analyzing, and writing requirements in the first place. Requirements management is the ongoing part that keeps those requirements organized, traceable, and under control as they change. The two overlap, and plenty of teams use the terms loosely.
What does the requirements management process involve?
Most teams break it into a few overlapping activities: gathering requirements from stakeholders, analyzing and prioritizing them, writing them clearly, getting them reviewed and agreed on, then tracing and controlling changes as the product evolves. It runs across the whole lifecycle rather than happening once at the start.
