The best Codebeamer alternative built inside Azure DevOps
SoftwareReviews lists Modern Requirements4DevOps first among Codebeamer alternatives in its Requirements Management category.
Codebeamer runs as a separate ALM platform and connects to Azure DevOps through integrations. Modern Requirements4DevOps turns Azure DevOps into the requirements platform itself, with document-based authoring, reviews, baselines, traceability and AI working directly on Azure DevOps work items.

The requirements depth regulated teams need, without a second platform.
One platform instead of two.
Codebeamer is an ALM platform with its own database. It can link code in Azure Repos natively, but your requirements and tests stay in Codebeamer. Connecting them to Azure DevOps work items takes an integration. PTC's integrations page lists one from Arorian Technologies that connects requirements and tests in Codebeamer with epics, user stories, tasks, defects, pipelines, builds and releases in Azure DevOps, through bidirectional synchronization or governed links. Arorian describes the split this way: product managers and system engineers author, review and approve requirements in Codebeamer, and development teams execute the work in Azure DevOps.
Modern Requirements4DevOps removes the middle. It uses Azure DevOps for data storage, inherits your process template and security, and has no separate URL or login. Your requirements sit where your code, test plans and pipelines already are.

One data store, not two.
Running Codebeamer on-premise means a 64-bit x86 Windows or Linux server, an Oracle or PostgreSQL database, and storage for documents, attachments and repositories. Codebeamer+, PTC's SaaS edition, takes the infrastructure off your hands, but your requirements still live in a second system next to Azure DevOps.
With Modern Requirements4DevOps, requirements live in the Azure DevOps Services organization or Azure DevOps Server you already run, with no separate requirements database to back up, secure and audit.
Codebeamer + Azure DevOps
Requisitos modernos para DevOps
Traceability to the work developers already do.
Because requirements are Azure DevOps work items, they link natively to branches, commits, pull requests and builds, the same way any work item does. Test Hub Reporting links requirements to Azure Test Plans and reports on coverage, and Trace Analysis builds bidirectional matrices across any two work item types, with coverage analytics and heatmap views.
With Codebeamer, code in Azure Repos links natively, while requirements reach Azure DevOps work items and pipelines through an integration.

Know what you're buying before the call.
PTC doesn't publish a Codebeamer price list. Its FAQ says Codebeamer offers flexible licensing options based on user roles and usage, and points buyers to PTC sales.
Modern Requirements4DevOps publishes four editions, Frontier, Frontier AI, Engineering and Engineering AI, with a public capability matrix that shows what sits in each, including which AI features. You still talk to a specialist for your number, but you walk into that call knowing which edition you need.

Does Codebeamer integrate with Azure DevOps?
Yes. Codebeamer links Azure Repos commits and pull requests natively, as an external SCM provider. For work items, PTC's integrations page lists an Arorian Technologies integration connecting Codebeamer requirements and tests with Azure DevOps epics, user stories, tasks, defects, pipelines, builds and releases. Hubs and Codebeamer's REST API are other routes. Either way, Codebeamer stays a second system.
PTC's video library also shows how to set up a Codebeamer MS Azure DevOps Connector for capturing automated test results. Modern Requirements4DevOps works differently: requirements are Azure DevOps work items, so there is no second system to connect.

When Codebeamer is the better fit
Your developers don't work in Azure DevOps.
Modern Requirements4DevOps is an Azure DevOps extension. If your engineers live in Jira, GitLab or another toolchain, it isn't the right fit, and we'll say so on the call.
You want one ALM platform for requirements, risk, test and product variants, tied into PTC's ecosystem.
Codebeamer covers hazard analysis and FMEA alongside requirements and tests, and links to Windchill, PTC Modeler and PTC RV&S through OSLC.
You run product line engineering at scale on PTC's tools.
Codebeamer's streams, Delta Merge and Pure Variants are built to carry approved changes across related product variants.
Your OEM or prime contractor standardizes on Codebeamer.
Where a customer mandates the platform, the tool choice is upstream of you.
If your developers, testers and pipelines already run in Azure DevOps, the rest of this page is for you.
Moving your requirements out of Codebeamer
We map your Codebeamer structure.
Trackers, item types, fields, workflows and relations are mapped to Azure DevOps work item types, fields and Smart Docs before anything moves.
Requirements and documents come across.
Codebeamer exports requirements to Word and Excel. Word Import brings Word documents into Azure DevOps as structured work items, and Azure DevOps' native CSV import handles tabular data, up to 1,000 work items per file. You review everything in a pilot project in your own Azure DevOps before sign-off.
Your team works as normal from day one.
Authoring continues in Smart Docs, traceability is rebuilt and checked in Trace Analysis, and the migrated set is baselined before the old system is retired.
We start with a free scoping call to map your specific Codebeamer setup.

Questions about switching from Codebeamer
What is the best alternative to Codebeamer?+
It depends on where your engineering work lives. For teams on Azure DevOps, Modern Requirements4DevOps is the closest fit, because requirements are Azure DevOps work items instead of data synced from a second platform. SoftwareReviews lists it first among Codebeamer alternatives in its Requirements Management category, with a composite score of 8.8 against Codebeamer's 6.7. In SoftwareReviews' Application Lifecycle & Release Management category, which compares broader ALM suites, Modern Requirements4DevOps is not listed.
Does Codebeamer integrate with Azure DevOps?+
Yes. Codebeamer can link Azure Repos commits and pull requests natively, and PTC's integrations page lists an Arorian Technologies integration that connects Codebeamer requirements and tests with Azure DevOps work items, pipelines, builds and releases. Modern Requirements4DevOps works differently: requirements are Azure DevOps work items, so there is no second system to connect.
How much does Codebeamer cost?+
PTC doesn't publish Codebeamer prices. Its FAQ says Codebeamer offers flexible licensing options based on user roles and usage, and it points buyers to PTC sales. Modern Requirements4DevOps is also priced on a call with a specialist, but it publishes four editions with a capability matrix, so you know which edition you're pricing before the call.
Does Codebeamer include AI?+
Yes, through Codebeamer AI, which PTC offers as a separate add-on, not included in the Codebeamer license. It provides requirements, test case and search assistants. Modern Requirements4DevOps includes four AI features (Elicitation, Analysis, Convert and Transform) in every package through Copilot4DevOps Lite, which has a usage allowance, and the full AI set in Frontier AI and Engineering AI.
Can you migrate requirements out of Codebeamer?+
Yes. Codebeamer can export requirements to Word and Excel, as well as to ReqIF. Word Import, included in every Modern Requirements4DevOps package, brings Word documents into Azure DevOps as structured work items, and Azure DevOps' CSV import handles tabular data, up to 1,000 work items per file. Pilot one project first and check fields, links and rich text.
Does Modern Requirements4DevOps run on-premise?+
Yes. It runs on Azure DevOps Server on-premise and on Azure DevOps Services in the cloud. It stores its data in Azure DevOps and inherits your Azure DevOps permission model and process template, so there is no separate requirements database to run alongside Azure DevOps.
Does Modern Requirements4DevOps support regulated industry standards?+
Yes. It is built for FDA 21 CFR Part 11, ISO 13485, IEC 62304, DO-178C, ISO 26262 and ASPICE programs. Review Management can require approvers to re-enter their login credentials before a decision is recorded, and the Approval Audit Report captures each approver's decision and timestamp. Modern Requirements has a SOC 2 Type II attestation and ISO 9001:2015 certification.
