Canada, [June, 2026] — Modern Requirements, a leading provider of requirements management software for Azure DevOps, today announced the general availability of Modern Requirements4DevOps NextGen, a next-generation upgrade to its flagship product. NextGen is rebuilt on React and Microsoft Fluent UI, standardized on Microsoft REST APIs, and aligned natively to Azure DevOps, delivering a modernized foundation that addresses performance, scalability, and usability bottlenecks in the previous generation.
The release represents the most significant update to Modern Requirements4DevOps to date. Every module has been upgraded, and a new unified workspace consolidates previously separate editing and viewing modes into a single experience.
“Modern Requirements4DevOps has been trusted by enterprise teams for years. As Azure DevOps evolved and the scale of requirements work grew, incremental improvements were no longer enough. We rebuilt from the foundation. NextGen carries forward everything our customers rely on, and rebuilds the experience around it.”
A Unified Workspace for Editing, Viewing, and Comparing
The headline change in NextGen is Smart Edit, a single workspace that unifies the previously separate Smart Editor and Smart View modes. Within Smart Edit, users can edit live work items, view full revision history, compare versions, navigate variant hierarchies, and manage links and attachments without switching modes.
The new workspace introduces additional productivity features, including @mentions for teammates, # references for work items, up and down arrow navigation between items, a dedicated Linked Artifacts tab, and a visual Variants Hierarchy view.
Three New Ways to Visualize Traceability
NextGen introduces three new traceability views that surface relationships and dependencies previously buried in tables. A new Tree view provides a hierarchical visualization of work-item links. A new Heatmap view displays requirement coverage and gaps as a visual density map. A new Analytics tab provides summary metrics and breakdowns to answer trace coverage questions at a glance.
New Compliance Controls for Review Automation
The Review module introduces a Dedicated Administrator Account for Review Auto-Actions. The new control routes all system-driven review actions, including approval comments, state changes, and auto-close, through a single governed account. It is fully configurable per organization and provides a clear separation between user activity and system actions, addressing compliance and audit requirements raised by enterprise customers in regulated industries.
Every Module, Upgraded
Alongside the headline changes, NextGen ships upgrades across General, Smart Docs, Version Package, Review, Traceability, Baseline, Smart Report, and Document Management. Smart Docs adds a toggleable hierarchy view and Azure DevOps-style filtering. Version Package introduces a completely new comparison interface, including a new compare-to-package-variant option. Baseline introduces clearer naming and a new Difference Report for side-by-side comparison against the current baseline, other baselines, or queries.
Built from Direct Customer Feedback
Every enhancement in NextGen was shaped by direct feedback from enterprise customers running Modern Requirements4DevOps at scale. Customer-requested capabilities now shipping in NextGen include item-by-item navigation in large-volume reviews, requested by BCBST. Side-by-side version package comparison, requested by GNR Sound and Lear. Visual variant hierarchy inside the editor, requested by GNR Sound. And system-generated state transition comments attributed to a system account, requested by Bayers and W&S.
Existing Workflows Preserved
Modern Requirements4DevOps NextGen preserves all existing data, conventions, and workflows from the prior version. Smart Docs remains Smart Docs, and Reviews remain Reviews. Where new behaviour is introduced, the Modern Requirements 1.0 behaviour remains available and is configurable on a per-organization basis, allowing teams to adopt new capabilities at their own pace.
